Spring arrives early on the farm…..take a look in the greenhouses
anytime from mid-March on and you will see a beautiful array of color…annuals, perennials, and hanging baskets bursting with color! As our greenhouses open and sales begin, we are reminded of the quick pace that will soon follow. Baby farm animals, tilling the soil to begin our plantings, Spring farm tours, and the beginning of the harvest season ……only a few months away.
Each year we have dozens of goat kids
born and anxiously await the arrival of our lambs. All our babies will be seen on our farm tours and will be used in our petting zoo during Kids Day.
As soon as the air starts to warm and the frost leaves the soil, Bob and Tim are out plowing and tilling the soil.
Once the soil is tilled, it will be ready to plant the crops that will be picked and sold in our farm market. Peas are the first crop to be planted, as we try to get them into the ground right around St. Patrick's Day. Squash and beans follow, and we plant our "early" sweet corn in hilled rows under plastic in early April. This technique usually brings us Jersey Fresh homegrown sweet corn by the Fourth of July!
Spring Farm tours start in late April and continue through mid-June. Students meet our farm animals,
tour our greenhouses, take a hayride around the farm, and get to pot a plant to take home. They also get a refrigerator magnet and a farm coloring book.
Our homegrown vegetables start arriving in mid-May. Strawberries are the first crop ready….
usually in Mid-May. Our delicious strawberries are available in our farm market as well as for pick-your-own. Peas become available as the strawberry season winds down, and before you know it, we are in full swing…..harvesting all types of homegrown fruits and vegetables, from apples to zucchini
.
